This was a borderline thumbs-up, but the game just has too many issues for me to recommend.• The game is extremely dark. I get they were going for a horror vibe, but I shouldn't have to turn the in-game brightness all the way up, turn on the lights and flashlight, and still squint to see anything.• The puzzles in the game seem to mostly have two stages: finding the pieces, and solving the puzzle. The latter part is generally enjoyable, but finding the things you need to find is excruciating. The poor brightness levels are part of that, but also the map-design completely lacks any details to draw the eye to things that should stick out. This lead me to have to look up a video guide a number of times, only to find that there's a key blending into the desk it's sitting on, or lying in a spot I already checked three times.• The FPS is horrendous. I have a beefy PC, and even with the settings all the way down I still get constant framedrops. With a non-gaming PC this game would be unplayable.• The storyline is boring.All-in-all, if the developers fixed the lighting, contextual clues, and performance issues, I would give this a weak thumbs up. Until then, I'd say look elsewhere.. There is so much I want to say about this game. I've lost count how many times I've said this, but I really wish Steam would have a neutral button because this is how I'm feeling about this game. I may have more detailed negative things to say about it, but I'm feeling neutral overall, to tell the truth.Positives: - Nice creepy atmosphere and sound effects.- Challenging puzzles. A lot of game developers seem to dumb down with their puzzles, making them extremely easy. It's been awhile since I've come across a game with challenging puzzles, which is what I like. The statue one had to be the most impressive one. Had to look up a walkthrough for that one.- Nice soundtrack. The music did get me a few times, making me think that something's coming after me, or something bad's happening. In the end, though, nothing happens, hehehe.- Nice lengthy gameplay (Took me 12.5 hours to beat it).- Some pretty good jump scares here and there that got me good.- Some pretty cool trippy parts that can mess with you.Negatives: - Not scary or terrifying. I'm aware that I stated the game as 'creepy' as my first positive note. But there is a difference between something scary, and something creepy. Basically the only things that scared me were the shadow girl, the ventriloquist dummy, and the doll. And I did state about the jump scares earlier, too, as a positive note. Thing is, most of them aren't much to be scared about. Quite a bit of them are repetitive, and others you can see coming from a mile away.- Challenging puzzles. Now, I know that I made this as a positive note earlier as well, but I'd consider it as a negative, too, because I got extremely frustrated with the ones with the hellhounds, which made me close to rage quitting countless times and not wanting to finish the game overall, and made me want the game to end faster.- I've encountered quite a bit of lagging in this game. Then again, I'm using an Acer laptop to play it. And most of us know that laptops don't really play well with specific games, unless they were custom-made ones where games can run extremely smooth. The most lag for me came from the outside areas. Like in the very first area you start off in when you're finding the key to get into the mansion, and in that one level I don't remember the name of. It's the one that's after the haunted place, there's a hellhound frolicking around, and you get an achievement called, Get Back, when you complete the level. (Funny how I don't care for achievements but I remember the name of this particular one. I'm horrible with names, too)- Half the gameplay in Chapter 2 is basically just a walking simulator, which disappointed me. At the same time, it did do something good, like make me think that something could jump out and attack at anytime. But in the end, nothing happens, and you wasted time just walking a long distance to get to the next level.- I found the parts where you had to find the keys pretty dumb. Like, for example, you unlock a room just to obtain a key to unlock a different room, and it can keep going on like that. Not much of a puzzle strategy, there. The only impressive part with finding the keys was in Chapter 3, when you're about to end one of its levels in the mansion, and reality and hallucinatory images are switching back-and-forth.Do I recommend this game? I'm aware that I have given it a positive score. The reason being that I have more positive points than negative. But I usually don't like recommending and would rather people try for themselves, or see for themselves from someone else' gameplay experience. But I would not recommend it to those with a low patience level. Trust me, I'm a patient person and I've gotten frustrated at quite a bit of parts in this game. I lost my patience in the one spinning blades room that I had to switch to easy mode for the rest of the game.Is it worth the price? I got it on special for about 66-68 percent off. And I would have to say that the price I got it was more worth it. I'm from Canada, so the original price is $16.99. At the sale price, I got it for about $5-$6. But I would say that that $16.99 is worth it for the length of the gameplay. But overall, I'd say it's more worth the sale price that I got it for.. Full review at https://www.scaredtoplay.com/blogs/view/obscuritas-reviewI wanted to like Obscuritas, and in a way I did. The music is fantastic, the locations are cool and interesting, and there's a bit of Lovecraft mixed into it all. However, there are some issues with this game that make it tedious (tedium =/= difficult). For instance, the save system for this game saves at the start of each chapter, and each chapter is roughly 20 minutes long. That means if you die near the end of a chapter, you have ~20 minutes of replaying what you've already done. This is made worse by the fact that death is instant, and the game is nearly too dark to see traps (If you do play, turn the brightness up to like 80%). In addition, the puzzles scale from great to infuriating. Once again, I'm not talking about difficulty. One of the most difficult puzzles in the game was also one of my favorite. Instead, I'm referring to situations like the very first puzzle in the house, where you're given a clear, concise hint which you follow to the letter, only to realize you didn't "solve" the puzzle because you weren't at the right position. I really enjoyed the second act, but you really have to be patient if you're going to get through this game. As such, I can't personally recommend it.. So far enjoying it, fun, good graphics, it is a psychological thriller and I love games that mess with your mind, however sometimes I get lost in what I am suppose to do but thats normal. And I wish there were key bindings so I could play with a controller.. Honestly first chapters are so easy to solve, but the traps takes me down easily I'm so careless Hahahaha!Just be careful in your ways and inspect the places carefully and memorize all the traps or else you will enjoy dying and dying Hahahahaha! anyway good luck on your own experience i enjoyed this game so much thanks.Jump scares are rare, yeah. but the places are so very weird specially the dolls i don't know how many of them in the game.sounds are so chilling the sfx, screams and the flashes are disturbing Haha, in other ways you can play this game with your YouTube playing TWICE music and you can focus on the puzzle 100 % lit.. As an initial disclaimer, I did not play this game until after they amended some of the major complaints I've seen others mention (namely, the lack of checkpoints in long levels).Short story: This game is playable, and does have some decent moments. But overall, it's another entry in the list of "mediocre horror games that I picked up despite the reviews."Long story: In Obscuritas, you play as Sarah, who one day inherits her estranged Great-Uncle's country estate. As the "inherited old mansion" trope dictates, Sarah heads over to the estate alone. Little does she know that her Great-Uncle is kind of a♥♥♥♥♥♥ and leaves her with a bunch of puzzles to solve and deadly traps to avoid.Although the atmosphere of the game is decent, and there were some genuinely eerie moments, most of the scares in the game (especially the first chapter) are cheap jump-scares. Something strange will happen (the phone will suddenly ring, something will suddenly fall, etc.), the screen will flash, and dramatic music will play. While I don't mind jump scares from time to time, the way these were constructed made it feel more like it was a desperate attempt to make the game scary. It didn't help that you could often retrigger some of the jump scares just by passing by the same area, which greatly diminishes the effect. It also didn't help that I didn't often see WHAT the jump scare was, although I was painfully aware that they attempted it by the flashing screen and dramatic music. The puzzles tend to range from "overly simplistic, as long as you find all of the right items scattered around" to "satisfyingly challenging" to "trial and error, or you have to die at least once to figure out how to progress, because there isn't really a good way to have known beforehand that you were bound to die (namely, the roller coaster track)." They supposedly tried to help out the player with some of the more challenging puzzles by giving hints in Normal and Easy mode, but I occasionally found this to be more grating than helpful. This was more apparent in later levels, where Sarah would helpfully explain the situation before I had a chance to look at it myself (but oddly enough, not in the places where it may have ACTUALLY been beneficial to hear her chime in, like with the "you'd have to die at least once" puzzles). To add insult to injury, if you had the audacity to die multiple times in a certain section, Sarah will chime in with "Would've been better in Easy mode!" I suspect much of the commentary was added in with some of the other updates, and I'm convinced that they added Sarah's "better in Easy mode" comment out of spite. The enemies that show up later in the game attempt to add a stealth component to the game, which I found interesting considering that the controls don't lend to much of a stealth-style game. Not only are they transparent, which makes them very difficult to see from a distance, but they are also extremely fast, which makes them impossible to outrun. I found myself caught off-guard in later sections by their presence, as I was often on top of them before I realized that they patrolled the area I needed to go. Your only defense against them (once you know they're in the area) is to listen for them, and find somewhere to hide out of their line of sight. There isn't much room for error though, because they are right on top of you the second they spot you. They also occasionally phase through walls, as I found when one of them spotted me from inside a greenhouse. I thought I maybe had some time to react, but I then found myself dead a second after being spotted. As for the story, there isn't really much to say: Save for a smattering of letters from Sarah's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Great-Uncle, the story is practically non-existant.To summarize, I don't feel like the developers hit the right balance in difficulty. I also feel like they were trying too hard to make it scary by adding cheap scares and common tropes. I would only recommend this game if you get it severely discounted, as I don't think it's worth the $14.99 it currently costs.. this game is Fun and hard at the same time if you are stuck you can go on you tube, I like this game and hate it at the same time, The Amusement park is why I like this game being a RCTC Fan is Why I had fun playing it, The Bad, The puzzles can be hard on same people I like some puzzles, What I Hate the most is the Dogs is Why I quit playing it at the end why waste my time on one part when the dogs keep jumpin on me when I am almost done with the game anyway I will watch the end on youtube I am not going to recommend this game because I did not finish it beginning to end But I did get my money worth out of it.. this game is Fun and hard at the same time if you are stuck you can go on you tube, I like this game and hate it at the same time, The Amusement park is why I like this game being a RCTC Fan is Why I had fun playing it, The Bad, The puzzles can be hard on same people I like some puzzles, What I Hate the most is the Dogs is Why I quit playing it at the end why waste my time on one part when the dogs keep jumpin on me when I am almost done with the game anyway I will watch the end on youtube I am not going to recommend this game because I did not finish it beginning to end But I did get my money worth out of it.. I enjoyed the game, good music atmasphere graphics arent bad too dark in certain places flashlight can be annoying when running low on batteries. The first half an hour is good in the mansion finding keys which is what you do throughout the entire game but the mansion has an extra 50 rooms or so that you cant see from the outside. And there is also a portal which you go through and the developers chuck everything horror they can think of to you theme park horror carnival of horror mental asylum cemetery to name a few some of the puzzles are mind blowing so had to use youtube for some walkthroughs as I said I enjoyed it wont play again for a very long time I am just glad I completed it by shutting down the portal. Thanks for reading.
